Beijing Pivots to Rein In Excess Capacity Amid Squeezed Industrial Profit
The thinking captured by the following statement about the Chinese government is the same kind of thinking that turned the U.S.' fiercely competitive electricity sector into a series of state-sanctioned monopolies 100 years ago: "Recently, [Chinese] officials have repeatedly warned against “disorderly” competition that has eaten into businesses’ profit margins." So what should we do to correct that century old mistake?
One simple move for state policymakers would be to open the door to new, independent, competitive, and large-scale utilities. The power of competition will bring faster development and innovation in all sorts of unimaginable forms, the very attributes that were lost when "disorderly competition" was eliminated. "Consumer Regulated Electricity" or CRE is a state-level policy proposal to achieve just that.
