This fascinating new paper by Apple researchers suggests two important things for the electricity sector: (1) there is nothing certain about the current trajectory of AI so we should consider that when putting taxpayer and ratepayer money at risk and (2) bigger is not always better so we should consider that increasingly massive grids may be a worse solution than many smaller grids.
