The Three Stages of CRE Opposition

We are often asked, “Why do people oppose CRE?”  There is a common theme which I’ve distilled to the “Three Stages of CRE Opposition.” (This excludes utilities.)

  • Stage 1: “That’s a stupid idea and no one will ever go for it.”  Then after thinking about it, they move to Stage 2.

  • Stage 2: “But if someone is stupid enough to try it, we need to prevent it because it will be wasteful.”  Then after thinking about it further, they move to Stage 3.

  • Stage 3: “Or worse, they could create a better grid leaving everyone else trapped on the bad grid!”

Stage 3 is when they’ve identified exactly why we need to enable CRE ASAP, so entrepreneurs can discover how to build a better grid and bring it to us all.
