Department of Energy Releases Report on Evaluating U.S. Grid Reliability and Security

Regardless of one's beliefs about grid reliability issues, there are at least two findings from yesterday's DOE report that are not controversial and are challenges for the electricity sector.

(1) Data centers can be built in 18 months, but it takes more than three times as long to add new generation required to service those data centers to the grid.

(2) Load growth is accelerating at a rate not seen in decades. The energy infrastructure industry, which is accustomed to moderate to zero load growth, needs to innovate to keep

Government forced fixes are never the best answer. The U.S. instead needs to open up the sector to new entities, competitive entities, independent entities, entities which aren't burdened by the long entrenched ways of designing, building, and operating. That's what "Consumer Regulated Electricity" or CRE is all about. CRE is state-level policy that will bring speed and innovation that simply aren't possible in today's sector. The faster a state adopts CRE, the faster it can reap the rewards.
