Gas turbine orders have surged in the past 18 months
One of the reasons that "Consumer Regulated Electricity" or CRE can lead to great new innovations is that the "CRE Utilities" are 100% off-grid or islanded. That may sound like a problem, but in fact it unlocks unimaginable innovation. For example, maybe there's a benefit to building a DC current "CRE Utility". You can't do that unless you're off-grid.
Or maybe there's a benefit to building a 50 Hz CRE Utility in the U.S. The S&P chart below shows one benefit to the 50 Hz idea: while orders for 60 Hz turbines (blue line) are through the roof, orders for 50 Hz turbines (orange line) are falling off. The benefit of using 50 Hz then is faster turbine delivery and lower prices. (We also understand that 50 Hz has some practical advantages over 60 Hz which could provide additional benefits.)
The point of these examples are not to say they're good ideas but to illustrate how CRE can unlock unimaginable innovation. Only the market can decide what innovations are useful and the market can do that only if we open the door to CRE.
