How Did ChatGPT Get 'Absolutely Wrecked' at Chess by an 1970s-Era Atari 2600?
How real is the AI demand for electricity? I don't know and neither does anyone else. I'm personally very optimistic and am excited to see private investors spend lavishly on it, but I get very conservative when it comes to spending ratepayer money. A common concern among utility regulators is the uncertainty.
Rather than spend ratepayer money on utility and grid buildouts for uncertain demand, how about opening the door to private investors building new utilities and new grids? That's the idea behind "Consumer Regulated Electricity" or CRE: states adopting new policy that would allow private investors to build new, independent, competitive, and large-scale utilities and grids. These "CRE Utilities" would have to move faster and be far more innovative than anything possible from today's sector in order to compete for business. AI companies win by getting faster access to power. Ratepayers win by reducing the uncertainty of future demand for the legacy utilities and grids.
