US power struggle: How data centre demand is challenging the electricity market model
Per WoodMac's terrific report, "There are substantial hurdles to meeting
such gargantuan demand growth: procurement bottlenecks for critical supply-side equipment, the retirement of substantial amounts of coal-fired generation, tariff and energy policy changes that make renewables development more challenging, long lead times on new projects and the need for transmission upgrades." As with all complex economic problems, we need MORE people, with MORE ideas, pursuing MORE solutions. We can't simply rely on the same limited players and structures that have led us to this point.
"Consumer Regulated Electricity" or CRE is state level policy that would open the door to MORE people, with MORE ideas, pursuing MORE solutions. A CRE policy would allow the creation of new utilities that are independent and competitive, and capable of achieving large scale. CRE is an important part of the solution to this complex economic problem.
