Data center approvals in Texas halted until audits completed, Gov. Greg Abbott says
ERCOT and the PUC are politically complicated and can’t move quickly because of that. “Bring Your Own Power” (BYOP), which is a custom version of CRE for Texas, had that built into its design. Since BYOP is off-grid and not under the PUC, it has the following advantages:
No ability to use eminent domain. All development must be supported by those impacted.
It’s faster. Avoiding PUC challenges like this current development prove the point.
It exists in parallel to ERCOT. Nothing about ERCOT changes.
It can’t impact existing ratepayers. It can’t raise the cost of their electricity. It can’t impact the reliability of their electricity.
BYOP would allow for a new wave of innovation. The good innovations can be imported into ERCOT. The bad innovations are costly only to private investors.
BYOP has bipartisan appeal. Consumers win. The economy wins.
It costs taxpayers nothing. The cost is fully borne by private investors.
Now is the time for BYOP.
