Electricity is the new price of eggs

Electricity is the new price of eggs, and yet it's not at all. In the case of eggs, people got angry about the price increases because they knew what eggs should cost. No one knows what electricity should cost. For decades we've used the rule-of-thumb that electricity should be "affordable", not as low as it can go. That's the difference between regulated prices and market prices. Regulation brings us someone's idea of affordable, while markets bring us low prices.

"Consumer Regulated Electricity" (CRE) can help us figure out what electricity should cost by allowing entrepreneurs to build new, independent, and competitive utilities. Since these "CRE utilities" will be competitive, they will be forced to deliver electricity to their customers at prices as low as possible. And also since they're competitive, they will have to deliver that low-priced electricity with a high degree of reliability. That's the nature of a competitive industry: the successful companies figure out how to provide high quality products and services at a low cost.
