FERC Directs Nation’s Largest Grid Operator to Create New Rules to Embrace Innovation and Protect Consumers
Yesterday FERC directed PJM to establish rules to facilitate service of AI-driven data centers and other large loads co-located with generating facilities. The day before PJM announced that their latest capacity auction came up short by 6,623 MW (https://lnkd.in/gMXvVKQr). Do these two things feel like they're working together or at odds?
The RTO/ISO "markets" may have worked good enough in a slow moving world, but they cannot handle today's rapid growth. "Consumer Regulated Electricity" (CRE) can accommodate the growth without jeopardizing grid reliability: allow entrepreneurs and private investors to create new off-grid utilities that focus on the growth. Key to CRE is that these new utilities wouldn't be limited in size or scope. They could supply MANY customers. MANY customers means large-scale. Large-scale means economies of scale: lower costs, higher reliability, and smaller environmental footprint.
