The Spirit of Electricity

Happy holidays! I recommend taking a few minutes to explore what is likely the only fine art representation of the sweeping history of the discovery and development of electricity: from Elihu Thomson to Michael Faraday to Joseph Fourier, from the principle of the dynamo to the induction coil to the voltaic battery and much more is captured in this incredible work.

The Spirit of Electricity by Raoul Dufy (1937) is one of the largest paintings in the world. It is composed of 250 wooden panels, measuring nearly 6500 square feet and weighing nearly 10 tons, bears witness to the history of electricity and its applications, from the first observations to the most modern technical achievements. The City of Paris Museum of Modern Art's website creates a highly interactive tool for exploring this work yourself.
