The Agonizing Task of Turning Europe’s Power Back On

Regardless of the ultimate cause(s) of the Spain/Portugal blackout, restarting the grid is a more complicated and delicate operation than is commonly understood as described in the linked Wired article. We should all take away the lesson that the bigger the grid, the bigger the impact when something goes wrong. Multiple smaller grids might seem inefficient, but such an approach would avoid a similar massive blackout. "Consumer Regulated Electricity" or CRE is one idea that would help. Instead of forcing all new loads into the same grids and utilities, CRE would allow for the creation of new, independent, and competitive utilities. And because the "CRE Utilities" would be new, independent, and competitive, they would also be faster moving, more nimble, and far more innovative than what's possible in today's electricity sector.
