Virginia data center growth slowed by electric grid study backlog
As this article rightly points out, the interconnection process isn't just about bureaucracy. It importantly includes studies which are, "...critical for making sure the grid can handle new demand safely. They help utilities plan for what could go wrong, such as a line outage or equipment failure, and determine whether nearby homes and businesses would still have power if a large facility came online." Policy shouldn't risk undermining the process but should look for ways of supplying electricity to the new data centers that avoid the strained utilities and grids. "Consumer Regulated Electricity" or CRE is one way of accomplishing this. CRE is state level policy that would enable the creation of new, independent, competitive, and large-scale utilities. These attributes means these new utilities will be faster to develop new supplies and bring us innovations that won't happen within the existing sector.
